material from your papers:

Group A:  Power and emotion

emotions resonate most powerfully from rigidly held beliefsBlind allegiance always causes problems in the history of humankind.

The emotions of compassion, love, kindness, consideration, openness are all on the more expansive end of the spectrum (Shilling 2009)    ~ E.Vivian

group violence :  the more fragile group solidarity is, the more likely the group is to respond with violence.   ~  D Luc

community of feeling can occur that bring people together

Because of the "division of labor" around a collective emotion, different individuals feel one or the other of these six depending upon where they "stand" vis-a-vis a colletively shared event.  Even contrasting emotions can be held by people around one event.

6 emotions around crisis

  1. Anger is from loss in status due to the action of another

  2. Fear is the result of a loss of power or sometimes another's gain of power.

  3. Sadness is induced by a permanent loss.

  4. Joy is the product of increased status.

  5. Guilt comes about when one has abused his power.

  6. Shame is the result of acting in a manner that is not worthy of status. ~Marianne M

  • Which is "deeper"?  fear or anger?  So what is worse?  Loss of power or loss of status?
  • If increased status creates joy, what emotion is the result of increased power?

1)      Group violence starts because  ~ Luc

a)     Group solidarity is strongest when there is violence

b)     Group solidarity is strengthened by violence

b)      Strength of group solidarity is being threatened, so violence is used to instill fear

d)      Group solidarity is weak, so other groups attack because they see it as a chance to take over

e)      One person in the group fights with another person in the group

Emotions and Work

Managers are afraid of decisions which could have fatal impact on their careers

Anxiety and fear persuade managers to impose more bureaucratic rules instead of communicating with subordinates

Whistle blowers risK their lives and safety for the protection of the public

The Myth of Managerial Rationality:  After WWII, managers were expected to think rationally and make wise decision.  analyze, compare, decide, deal with problems, and take responsibility.  Hence, need information.  But ... managers tend to worry about what will happen in the future.  They accept mediocre outcomes rather than trying to achieve the best. emotion is part of decision makers' process.  Emotion is used to think rationally.  Example of the Pentagon and 20% of outflow:  War on Waste.

"Strong Culture Corporations" - sales, recruit people when they are vulnerable.  these "Strong Culture Corporations" bind newcomers to themselves.  Personal conversion testimonies.  Over-work results.  Works on personal relationships and vulnerabilities.

Rather than feelings of tension or fear, managers should have humor and positive emotions to diffuse their negative emotions.  Laughing, pleasant relationships, enjoyable moments, and feelings of job satisfaction expand a person's cognitive skills and strengthen resiliency.

1)      What is the main emotion that drives managers to follow routines rather than communicate?  ~ Tse Ying Lee

a)     Fear

b)     Excitement

c)     Shame

d)     Frustration

e)     No feeling at all

Barbalet:  people are bored with their work lacks meaning.
