Ecru – A Sonnet

Ecru’s a color that you learn
When you are about nine
Before that, basics took their turn
Red, blue, yellow were just fine

But turning nine you get to show
Fine distinctions you can make
Between Darwin and angels and lava flow
A Big Bang and a sophisticated cake

Ecru steps in to take its place
Among the other shades
You show the world you’ve gained some grace:
Knowing how each color best parades.

Ecru says, “Wow.”
And we can’t even really say how.
